Ann Sanders of Toano, Virginia, who performs as "Tuttles" and
Barbara Waters-Riddle, of Englewood, Florida, who performs as "Nuzzles"
have been named Clowns of The Year, by Clowns of America
International
(COAI). COAI is a 5000+ member international performing clown arts
membership organization boasting members in 18 countries around the
world. Barbara has been a performing clown for many years while Ann
began clowning around in 1992. Both have also served COAI in various
leadership capacities, currently as Regional Ambassadors. Avid clown
competitors, both Ann and Barbara have won many regional and
international awards and accolades through the years. Barbara, a cancer
survivor, is a recognized clown arts instructor who enjoys working with
both youngsters and adults. Ann is a noted author who contributes
articles on the clown arts to several publications. Both are actively
involved with several charitable organizations and often perform at
facilities close to their hearts. Barbara donates time and support to
Circus Sarasota’s Laughter Unlimited, the Love Land Center for adults,
and the Elsie Quirk Library in Englewood, FL. Ann donates time and
support to the Blessing of the Clowns at Hickory Neck Church (Toano,
VA), Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Williamsburg, Child Development
Resources, Virginia Living Museum (Newport News, VA), and the Virginia
Home (Richmond, VA).
"The Clown of The Year" is the most prestigious award granted by our
organization, said COAI President Paul Kleinberger recently. It’s
purpose is to recognize excellence as well as highlight personal and
professional achievement within the clown arts. It has typically been
awarded to one member each year since 1991. When the committee charged
with the final selection of our 2007 Clown of The Year reviewed the
nomination packages for Ann and Barbara, a decision between the two
could not be reached. Ann and Barbara are exemplary clowns who are two
of the best in the business and an inspiration to our membership and
clowns around the globe. The award has been conferred on both!
