COAI Purpose
The purpose of Clowns of America International Website is to share,
educate, and act as a gathering place for serious minded amateurs,
semiprofessionals, and professional clowns. COAI provides its membership
with necessary resources that allow them to further define and improve
their individual clown character. Visitors who are interested in the
clown arts will find a variety of resources that will stimulate their
interest, foster their curiosity and offer pathways to valuable
information.
The New Calliope
Our official publication, The New Calliope, is our vehicle of
communication and is published and mailed to members six times a year.
(Family members do not receive individual copies.)
The New Calliope contains:
- Informative articles regarding the art of
clowning, such as, makeup, costuming, props, skit development, etc.
- News of regional and local clown alley activities
- Resources for your clowning needs
- Information on the annual international
convention
- Information on the various regional conventions
through the year
Alleys
COAI encourages members to join local clown groups, troupes or alleys in
their area. Local clubs affiliated with COAI receive a charter and can
purchase educational materials at a reduced cost. There are also two
competitions available at the alley level. The first is the Charlie
Award, which is presented to the alley that most actively promotes
"International Clown Week" (the first week in August). The second is
"The New Calliope Best of the Press" awarded to the best alley
newsletter. Other alley recognition programs are conducted by the COAI
Board from time to time. COAI believes your individual participation in
an alley is essential in the growth and foundation of clown alleys and
that alleys play a significant role in the propagation of the performing
art of clowning, locally and around the world.
COAI Annual Spring
International Convention
In the spring of each year COAI holds an international convention. The
locations are known two years in advance and are usually located in or
near a major U.S. city. It is not necessary to be a member of COAI to
attend a convention, but only members of COAI are eligible to enter the
various competitions available at these conventions. The purpose of
these conventions is to provide educational seminars, competitions for
individual and group skits, makeup and costume competitions, as well as
competitions in balloons and parade ability. There are opportunities to
see dealer demonstrations, buy supplies, exchange information, and
experience regional cultures. Regional conventions are held at various
dates and locations throughout the year. Dates, locations, and
information about these conventions are advertised in "The New Calliope"
magazine, along with regional vice-presidents' additional information.
