Up

Once upon a time a friend called me and said that we needed to do something of value with our lives. She had read an article in the local paper about an all women's clown club group. We went to our first outing dressed "funny" and the rest is history. I joined the Powder Puff Clown Club in 1968. Betty Cash was my mentor and the one that saw the Auguste character within me. Being a wallflower at that time, the name "Bashful" was appropriate. A parade clown to begin with, once put on the stage, they almost needed a hook to get me off.

In 1978, I joined MN Clown Alley 19 and Clowns of America. I attended my first COA convention in Philadelphia. After that I was hooked. I have attended every COA and COAI convention since that time.

In 1986, I was asked to run for a COAI office and won one of the Directors at Large positions, which really didn't mean anything. There was no job description. We basically went to meetings, discussed things, and voted. In the fall of 1991, the COAI Board meeting was at the 1992 convention location in Jacksonville, FL. We didn't have a quorum and couldn't vote on anything. This was our most productive meeting up to this time. We had a moderator and we held a brainstorming session. It was out of these sessions that we came up with lists of what the membership wanted, categorized them, prioritized them, and then assigned the lists to officers. We gave the officers job names and descriptions.

From 1986 to 1996, I have accomplished many things that set a standard in the club. I formalized the Convention Criteria, developed various forms, created the Officers Manual, and put together the Clowning 101 Book in English and Spanish. Presently, I am working with the 2 upcoming COAI conventions. Also, I am trying to organize the Regional Affiliations Program.

As for clowning, I am a "Life Time Member" of the Powder Puff Clown Club. I perform in the American Legion Post 39 from the fall to the spring, doing nursing home shows. I am part of a 3-person troupe, CADOBA, that does lectures, library shows, picnics, open houses, and after school classes. I have been an alley leader and instructor at Clown Camp in LaCrosse, WI and have taught locally, and at several COAI and Midwest conventions.
