Tom
and Pat Newton became involved with The New Calliope in 2005. Pat took on the
role as editor while Tom is the production manager. This couple has found a
great balance using their talents collectively in the graphics business for the
last 17 years.
Originally from southern Ontario, Pat attended the Ontario College of Art before
working as an art director with a national magazine and marketing specialist
with a major power tool company. Tom picked up his B.A. in Business at Luther
College in Iowa after which he was a partner in a graphic printing business for
many years. After the two met and married they decided to pool their talents and
formed Newton Studios, Inc. They currently publish a community newspaper in
Englewood FL as well as working with many customers on a variety of print
related materials.
The Newtons were drawn to The New Calliope since Pat has been clowning for many
years. Starting in her middle 20s she took classes in Toronto Ontario. It was,
however, after marriage and children that she returned to the art form. This
time it was because of their two children Jimmy and Katie. They went to a local
children’s clown class at the ages of six and seven where they fell in love with
the performance aspect of clowning. Competing at SECA the following year the two
took a gold medal in the junior joey skit division. Then they decided to compete
with the adults and secured a bronze the following year.
Encouraged by her children to return to clowning Pat joined them locally
performing at many venues. Now the children are teen agers and not clowning on a
regular basis, Pat enjoys working as a clown with Circus Sarasota’s Laughter
Unlimited Program which is a humor therapy program with seniors. She also face
paints having placed third at the International Face Painting Convention in 2003
in the most original design. She is also currently the third person in the
United States to be certified by FACE of Britain.
Tom, on the other hand, did a bit of mime clowning but did not get back into
face until the COAI International Convention in New Orleans where he was able to
take third place in the skit competition as a hobo clown.
The Newtons find The New Calliope a great blend between their professional
backgrounds and their love of the artform called clowning.
